Nestled within the native bushland of St Andrews on the Mornington Peninsula, Tiberius House is a considered alteration and addition to an existing single-storey residence, designed to honour its natural setting while substantially improving liveability and contemporary amenity.
The project responds to a gently sloping site characterised by established indigenous vegetation and a rich canopy of retained trees. Rather than imposing upon this landscape, the design threads a low-lying horizontal form through the terrain, the dwelling sitting lightly on its site, virtually invisible from Tiberius Road and the surrounding streetscape.
The proposal extends the existing footprint, complemented by generous wraparound decking of and a 3m × 7m pool constructed predominantly above ground to minimise disruption to the site's natural contours.
Architecturally, the palette is deliberately understated. White corrugated metal roofing sweeps across the entire building envelope, unified by new soffits, fascias and Colorbond drainage in matching white. Walls are clad in James Hardie Oblique vertical cladding, primarily white with timber-look accents at the entry sequence and key elevations, while retained sections of existing rendered brick provide textural continuity with the original structure. A pivoting timber-look entry door anchors the arrival experience, drawing the eye through to the bush beyond.
Internally, existing timber floors are retained, sanded and polished, with new timber flooring to the extended areas maintaining material harmony throughout. Five bedrooms, multiple living zones and reconfigured wet areas are arranged along a single-storey plan that maximises northern solar access and captures expansive views across the surrounding bushland.
